What does it mean to repipe your house? Repiping is the process of replacing all the existing piping in your home with new, upgraded piping, usually copper or PEX. The fittings and valves are also replaced. This creates better water pressure, eliminates bad tasting water caused by contaminated pipes, and mitigates the risk of water damage from an unexpected pipe burst.
Why do homeowners repipe their houses? A repipe job is usually done because the pipes are old galvanized steel, defective Kitec pipes, have burst, or are in danger of bursting. If you have rust-colored or bad smelling water, have low water pressure, notice visible oxidation on your pipes, or live in a home that has not had the pipes replaced in 50 years or more, you could be ready for a repipe job.
Replacing defective pipes before they burst. In some cases, homes built in certain years may have used substandard water piping. There are lawsuits that have been filed in these cases because of water damage sustained from pipes bursting spontaneously. No matter what the reason for your repipe project, rest assured that the team at Wise Monkey has decades of combined experience handling repipe projects.
Our team works in a well-coordinated and efficient process to replace each old pipe in your home with brand new, durable water pipes and fittings, ensuring that your home is protected from potential water damage and pipe corrosion.
The average home costs about $5,000 to $30,000 to repipe, for a one to three bedroom house, including finish and paint.

Replace your old galvanized pipes with long-lasting, durable copper pipes. If you have low water pressure, leaks, or funny tasting water, your old pipes likely must be replaced soon.
Perfect for interior piping, PEX is corrosion resistant in areas where the water has high pH levels. This piping option can last up to 75 years. Expands and contracts flexibly in changing weather.
Homes built between the mid-1990s and 2007 may have Kitec pipes, which are prone to burst spontaneously. We can repipe your home with stable options like copper or PEX, and be done quickly.
Kitec is a polymer pipe that was typically installed in homes between 1995 and 2007. The issue with Kitec pipes is they are known to spontaneously burst, particularly on the hot water pipes. When Kitec pipes burst, it can cause extensive water damage to your home, including mold and mildew.
From the mid-1990s to 2007, Kitec was thought to be a cheaper alternative to copper piping. Recalls on Kitec piping began in 2005, about ten years after it became popular as a piping option. This implies that Kitec pipes may only last about ten years. Homes that have Kitec plumbing will likely experience increasingly more pipe failure as time goes on.
Many homes in the Sacramento area that were built several decades ago used galvanized piping, which can degrade and fail due to dezincification. Copper piping is resistant to corrosion, and will not degrade or erode in the elements.
Wise Monkey Repipe uses high quality, heavy grade “Type L” copper piping that is made in the USA, and is manufactured using strict guidelines. This means your repipe job should last for decades.
Lastly, if you ever plan on reselling your home, copper piping is preferred for most home buyers.
PEX stands for cross-linked polyethylene. This piping is a type of plastic made from high-density polyethylene. PEX is very flexible, doesn’t make any noise when the water runs, and is extremely durable. For over ten years, PEX has been approved for repiping replacements in California. PEX is best suited for under-floor heating systems, in-home sprinkler systems and some outdoor use.The lifespan of PEX piping is close to 75 years for a residential building in the Sacramento area.
One additional consideration is PEX can withstand freezing conditions without bursting, and also is resistant to degradation from water with high pH levels. Check the chart below for comparisons of Copper pipping vs PEX piping.
Which type of piping should you install in your home if you decide to repipe? There are several factors you should consider when looking at copper vs PEX. These include the pH of the local water source, climate, structure of the house, and future plans for the house.
Here is a chart of some pros and cons of both copper and PEX piping.
Copper | PEX |
Costs a bit more than PEX | Lower cost than copper pipes |
Installs quickly due to ubiquitous use | Does not require soldering to install |
50 year limited manufacturer warranty | 25 year limited manufacturer warranty |
Corrosion resistant | Corrosion resistant |
Pipes can freeze in extreme cold | Freeze resistant |
Rodent proof | Rodents can chew through PEX |
Fully recyclable | Cannot be recycled |
UV light does not affect copper | Can break down with extended lengths of exposure to sunlight |
Has no reactions with chlorinated or fluoridated water | Excessive chlorine in water can create chemical reactions |
Requires more water in pipes to work at peak levels | Less water required to maintain pressure compared to copper |
Acidic water can cause corrosion over many years | Entirely resistant to acidic water |
There was a “Pipe Pandemic” in Folsom, 2019-2020, which resulted in a multitude of homes needing to be completely repiped. Wise Monkey Repipe was among the list of companies people were using for their jobs. I got 3 estimates. I chose Wise Monkey for these 2 reasons – excellent response time/Flawless Job!! They are polite, clean, skilled in their field, timely, respectful of your property and family, and they also are genuinely nice people to work with! I loved their work so much, I hired them to come back and do some construction work in the home.
